Requirements for participation
”... I think I need something to kick it from my head to the real thing. That ‘something’ I think will be recruitment, finishing the ‘character creation details’ and having people start to send me their character backgrounds. This’ll put pressure on me to get things going and also give me some story threads to work into the overall mileau.”
of course, you also say later not to bother making a character yet but it’s too late for that: i made four of them, sorta.
yeah, this gives you some idea of how stimulating my saturday nights are anymore – i watched a couple episodes of The Wire from the library and then, because i was tired of sitting in front of the tv, i decided to sit in front of the computer.
i started out exploring two different ideas for a gnoll – a ranger with the beastmaster build from Martial Power and a warlock who was so terrified of being swallowed up by the demonic heritage of gnolls that he chose the fey pact instead… then it occured to me that, since gnoll families follow a pack structure, why not make both and have them be siblings? so i added in two more, a straight fighter and a warlord and hashed out a Fate Stream for the four of ‘em.
basically, these were gnoll pups sold into slavery by their parents to some unscrupulous degenerate that wanted to raise them as gladiator pit fighters. that was foiled by a vice bust by the kings constable [told you i’ve been watching too much of The Wire], a decent sort who decided to basically adopt the four gnolls and see to it they had the opportunity to become something other than bloodthirsty savages. whether this is how things actually turn out isn’t fully determined yet…
obviously, i’m not asking you for permission to play four characters – my preference at this time would be to play the beastmaster ranger, who has a big mastiff for a companion since i didn’t think there would be too many hyenas in this “great kingdom” setting the fate stream tossed out there for me… plus, the stats for the beastmaster animals are all pretty much uniform anyhow; specific species are basically just color information anymore so hyena or great dane is all pretty much the same as far as the rules are concerned.
whether you want to use the other three siblings as NPCs or just leave them in the generally unexplored realm of most PC backstories is up to you. like i said, i haven’t done more than rough out the general character and Fate Stream backgrounds yet but i’ll probably have the character sheets and details ready for you to look at during a break in our gen-con festivities.
speaking of which, you never gave me any measurements for that suit, you know. if you get them to me by friday i can check out the selection next saturday but that’ll be my last chance before indianapolis… and i gotta tell you, man, the selection was pretty picked over for some reason this weekend so someone else must be buying threads up, too.
I didn’t actually realize that people could view this stuff yet. I didn’t count on the industry of Phil. :)
Anyway, everything that’s up here to date is just musings on my part. Basically its an online notebook of ideas that I wanted to get out of my head into writing. While most it will likely make it into the final thing, its all still up in the air.
Regarding ‘getting this shit started’, There have been several major points that need(ed) to be addressed before I want to start broadcasting this to my larger gamer pool. The first and foremost was sorting out some sort of online virtual tabletop. I feel like I’ve hit on something that will work very well for us. I’ve played 2 game sessions with it so far and, apart from the tech issue learning curve, its just about ready to unveil at GenCon.
I’m also recognizing that, at the moment, I have a lot of ideas about hooks, encounters, storylines, etc etc, but I think I need something to kick it from my head to the real thing. That ‘something’ I think will be recruitment, finishing the ‘character creation details’ and having people start to send me their character backgrounds. This’ll put pressure on me to get things going and also give me some story threads to work into the overall mileau.
So, to summarize, don’t start making a character yet. Stuff from Dragon will be allowed, and warforged in particular, due to the eberron book. Webcams are not necessary (or even desired at this point, due to bandwidth limitations), but voice over IP will be (ie, you’ll need a microphone). As far as becoming a member, all you have to do is hold tight and work on getting better internet accessibility. As I’m putting together my list of people who I think would be interested/available/technically capable, my only concern for your participation is your internet availability.
Last, once I start to seriously work on this, I expect there will be a complete reset of this site, clearing the comments page and forums and whatever else, so if you see something on here you want, make a copy of it. And because I’m somewhat of a bastard, I moved pretty much everything on here but the comments into ‘GM’ only to prevent sneaky bastards from seeing what they’re not supposed to see. :)
as for the “issues” raised under that heading…
my vote would be for one weekend and one weekday game a month and a “quick” level advancement – one level per game sounds wonderful, quite frankly, but i’m willing to go with any scheme that minimizes the kindergarten shit and gets on to the real ASAP.
now, as for my actual availability… i don’t have a home internet account. i do have a laptop with wifi capability, however, so i don’t think that’ll prove an insurmountable hurdle twice a month.
i also have free access to the internet via the library, essentially seven days a week – but within limits and an hour “earlier” than you guys. so, in wisconsin time, i can get on the library computers from roughly 4:30-7:30pm, M-Th and 9am-4pm Sat and noon-4pm on Sunday. [i work until five and that’s when both of the local libraries close on Fridays here, so i basically can’t rely on using library access that day.]
playing at the library or in public might also not be a good place for video or voice, depending on how extensively you plan to use those… but if it’s a big issue, i could probably just play a character who is mute and confine all my in-game communication to the text component i’m sure any system would support.
lastly: how do i become a member of this game, assuming you want me?
well, i guess it’s not “up above” it’s “down below”... and, shit: is “excision” even a word?
i don’t know enough about HTML to realize that putting a hyphen before and after your comment results in it getting a line crossed through it once it get’s posted… so that line about warforged up above should be read as emphasis, not excision, if that makes any sense…
so have you actually gotten anyone to make a character yet? ‘cause i love you, dude, but i’m not gonna buy a webcamera for a game that might never get off the ground.
and do you want any sort of character concept or “pitch” or should we just follow the rules you’ve laid out and assume it’s kosher until told otherwise?
[by “no MM” i’m assuming you mean shit like goblins or dopplegangers aren’t playable races at this time, but shit like gnomes and goliaths and the warforged, now that the eberron books are out! are?
question: do you consider DRAGON magazine to be official material? because wizards does – i think the issue you sent me had a big write-up about how shit in the magazines was considered playtested and official content upon publication… but, obviously, i’m checking with you first, before putting together a gnoll bounty hunter.
and if you think these questions are bad, just ask jerry and kurtz how bad it can get once i really get invested in a character…]
